2019-2020

Class 1 have just been on a fantastic trip to Whinlatter Forest. We loved the journey on the bus singing Christmas songs. Then we had hot chocolate and gingerbread Christmas Tree biscuits. We got a big surprise when Santa came to visit us and he even gave us all a present. Lastly we got to pick the school Christmas tree. It will be going in our school hall.

Welcome to Year 1 & 2
Mrs Steel's Class

2019-2020

Class 2 had a Road Safety workshop. They did lots of role play on how to cross a road safely on different types of crossings. They spoke about what might happen if they cross on a corner or in between cars. They also spoke about why it is so important to wear a helmet when riding a bike and to wear bright clothing to make themselves visible.

Class 2’s maths unit this term is measuring.

The children measured out the ingredients for pancake mix.

We made and ate them together in class. YUM!

Class 2 had a visitor from a robotics engineer to show the children how to programme a Bee-bot. They spent the morning programming the Bee-bots to go around different tracks.

Welcome to Year 3 & 4

2019-2020

On Friday 27th September years 3 and 4 visited the beacon museum and took part in loads of Viking activities. This all links to our history topic at the moment. We had a fantastic time and learned lots!

As part of our history topic on the Vikings we've been learning about what the Vikings ate and drank. We followed a recipe to make some Viking bread. We tried it with honey, just like the Vikings used to eat it and most of us thought it was delicious!

Welcome to Year 5
Miss Steel's Class

2019-2020

A surprising letter arrived for Year 3 and 4 children today! When Prince Harry and Princess Meghan had their new son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, some of us worked with Mrs Dennison to send Congratulations cards to the royal family. This is the lovely letter they sent us to show their appreciation and each child received their own card and photograph of the happy family.

Class 4 had a super exciting parcel arrive for them . . . it looked as though it was from the Iron Man!

We have been reading The Iron Man story by the famous author Ted Hughes and we contacted the illustrator, Chris Mould, to tell him how much we enjoyed his illustrations.

He sent us each a lovely bookmark that he had specially designed to celebrate his new edition of The Iron Man on the 50th anniversary of it first being published.

Year 5 used a decoupage technique to make ornaments of the first letter of their name.

We used old maps as this links in with our geography topic this half term.

In Class 4, we enjoy working together to help us compare and order 6-digit numbers in our Maths learning.

Year 5 have been learning all about forces in science.

To explore the effects of air resistance and gravity we made and tested different designs for parachutes.

It was great fun testing our parachutes.

Year 5 have also been experimenting with water resistance as part of their work on forces. We made different shapes from modelling clay and timed how fast they travelled through water to try and find out which shapes were most streamlined

The Year 5 children have been learning how to cycle safely during their Bikeability training.

Mrs Dennison was very proud and pleased that everyone in the class passed and took home their Bikeability badge and certificate.

Well done Year 5!

Week 1

Welcome to Year 6
Mr Lucey's Class

2019-2020

This half term Year 6 have been studying ‘Pop Art’ and the pop artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

We have created a range of mediums including painting, pencil shading and pastel work.

Once again Year 6 are taking part in the First Lego League challenge. This year’s project is called ‘City Shaper’ and is all about how design, nature and technologies influence the ever-changing cities and towns we live in. The children are busy building the Lego models and constructing their robot. After half term the children will begin to undertake the programming challenges.

Our class novel this half term has been The London Eye Mystery. All the children have had a copy of the book and we have used it as part of our reading curriculum as well as a stimulus for writing. The children loved reading the novel and were on the edge of their seats finding out what had happened to Salim. The children have produced some brilliant newspaper reports documenting Salim’s disappearance and how the Spark children solved the mystery.

Our science topic this term has been Evolution and Inheritance. We have studied adaptations, evolution and inheritance in animals and plants. Also, we have found out about the prominent Victorian scientist Charles Darwin and his amazing adventures on the Galapagos Islands. We carried out an investigation about his famous finches using tweezers, kitchen tongs and pegs to mimic the adaptations of the different finches’ beaks.

Recently Year 6 visited Westlakes Science Park to explore the STEAM trail. Adam, our guide met us at Ingwell Hall and led us around the trail. Year 6 had a fantastic time learning all about the STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, art and maths) and how they are part of our everyday lives. The children found out about: wind energy, electricity, solar power, photography, nuclear energy and the water cycle. They even had time to solve word puzzles and take some brass rubbings. A great time was had by all.

This half term year 5 and 6 have been lucky to work with the Primary Business Partnership. Claire and Alfie from the partnership visited us at school and taught us all about the manufacturing process, how businesses manufacture products, buy raw materials and sell them for a profit.

The children worked in small business teams and had to manufacture cubes, buy additional raw materials to build more cubes and then sell their final products for profit. Watch this space as a number of the pupils were natural entrepreneurs and could soon be ‘hired’ by Lord Sugar!

Welcome to Mrs Stanley's Class

Mrs Stanley teaches Geography, History and RE across school in the mornings
then works with Year 5 every afternoon.
